Bandcamp Crate Dig | Month Of November

An Edmonton based metalcore band where abum sale proceeds go towards an LGBTQ charity and two ambient projects that are oddly weather based. Maybe it's the seasonal depression.

ANALEMMA - MAHRIA

 hardcore/punk. Edmonton, AB

hardcore/punk. Edmonton, AB

I'm on a roll with finding heavier projects that suit my taste unfotunately on mahria's bandcamp description for this track they noted that mahria is no longer a band. I really enjoyed the raw emotion that is displayed on this album. Similar to last month's iburiedyourflowers, we feel that the vocalist is in a sense of disarray, while the rest of the band fills in the background with talented melodies at times and controlled chaos in others. Analemma as a project was almost not completed but the band members felt it was a diservice to leave it as it was so instead of completing the project and attempting to make money off of a band that they didn't want to pursue anymore they made 100% of the sales go to charity. The charity is the "Shades of Colour Community" based in Edmonton that aims to provide a safe-space for queer and trans coloured people in Edmonton. Follow this link to learn more. I think "III" is my favourite track on Analemma because it displays a healthy mix of melodic instrumentation and aggresive vocals to create a nice full sounding song.

SVNDOGS - PARHELION

 Ambient. Austin, TX

Ambient. Austin, TX

I did some research on the title of this project and it turns out that parhelions and sun dogs are names for the same optical phenomenon that can happen because of ice crystals refraction, typically when the sun is nearest the horizon. The only time I have ever witnessed a sun dog was during winter and this project has a chilly feel to it. The first track alludes to maybe a witnessing of this phenomenon in what seems to be an arid tundra-like environment. As the album progresses I feel as if I'm lost in this tundra, as the evening ends and the night kicks in. "Anthe1ion" starts off quite a bit more spooky than the previous which makes me believe that nightfall has arrived and I am to survive the rest of the night. Overall, a very interesting ambient project and worth the listen.

CRUSH - YEARN

 80s/Chillwave. Boston, MA

80s/Chillwave. Boston, MA

Crush has me reminiscent of summer days in this cold winter weather. This beautiful synth-ridden EP tells a story with three iterations of a similar beat. From "Crush" to "Kiss" we see a progession of a love tale. From the first crush, to the first date, the production adds elements of excitement to each track and changes it up just enough to make each piece enjoyable on their own. The album just screams 80s summer, good times, good drinks out on the beach along with teenage love. The guitar solo at the end of "Kiss" is really something to treasure as it perfectly sums up the progression of the songs. It has the power to remind you of anxiousness and butterflies from your years of youth and first times, and first loves.
