Bandcamp Crate Dig | Month of June 2017
Found some stunning projects from June; Baloo brings us their debut "Chrysalis", the Saddle Creek signed band Big Thief released an emotional album titled "Capacity, and an Isaiah Rashad like artist piErce washington got my attention.
I stumbled across this debut LP from the Philadelphia based band Baloo and was instantly hooked. The vocals are super well done throughout and right away I got a Manchester Orchestra meets Soundgarden vibe. The track "Groundhog Day/The Gypsy" is a definite favourite of mine. It leads on this long mystical intro that wakes you up with the line "sometimes you're so fucking bitter" and the rest of the song blew me away. Chrysalis is filled with fantastic writing that gets strung together with stunning melodies. I don't know if it is because their music sounds like it would have been huge in the 90's or if they've been around since then because this feels like an established band putting out some quality content. Definitely worth a check out if you are into some 90's style garage rock. Bandcamp link here.
Big Thief is a relatively new name in music as well but they have had success with their previous album Masterpiece. Featured on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series and receiving positive critic reviews pushed Big Thief into the eyes of the indie scene. Capacity is a slightly more relaxed album with a lot more focus on lyrical content. "Shark Smile" is already a star on this roster of great songs with a contagious chorus and a sense of calm excitement. Adrianne's vocals are so inviting and soft that she can make any song more relaxing than it already is. She has a very good sense of how her vocals are going to mix with each track. A talented bunch deserves attention so go give Capacity a few listens here.
Bandcamp is flooded with a bunch of hip-hop projects daily so to find one that is as good as Resrvd. This groovy album hits a high stride in the second track and doesn't fade. piErce washington displays some unique flows in tracks like "Driveway" and "Laskos in Abeja" and there is know denying that he is clever with his lyrics. Resrvd fits well in the surgence of jazz inspired concious raps with catchy melodies. "Alls" delivers an attitude of foreseen fame. piErce is climbing to the top and he doesn't want anybody slowing him down. Coming out of a hip-hop drought in Dallas, piErce is sure to catch the attention of anyone that is looking for laid back production mixed with some smooth vocals similar to those of TDE artist Isaiah Rashad. Peep the project on Bandcamp.
